How It Works

Inflation Adjustment (Forward) calculates how much more something would cost in the future:

Future Value = Present Value × (1 + rate)years

Purchasing Power (Backward) calculates what a past amount is equivalent to today:

Equivalent Value = Past Value × (1 + cumulative inflation rate)

Understanding Inflation

Key Concepts

  • CPI (Consumer Price Index) measures average price changes for a basket of goods and services
  • Purchasing power is the quantity of goods your money can buy
  • Real vs nominal value — nominal ignores inflation, real accounts for it
  • Rule of 72 — divide 72 by the inflation rate to estimate how many years until prices double

Common Uses

  • Retirement planning and savings targets
  • Salary negotiation and real wage analysis
  • Comparing prices across different decades
  • Investment return evaluation (real vs nominal)
  • Contract and lease escalation clauses
